We’re standing on the second floor of Cavanaugh
Hall, right across the street from the Campus
Cavanaugh is actually connected to the Campus
Center through a Skywalk.
IUPUI has about 6 or so of these skywalks,
plus underground connections between buildings.
The majority of our buildings are connected,
which is great for getting across campus quickly.
And for those days when the weather isn’t
great and it’s raining or snowing, we can
just walk through the skywalks and get from
one building to another without ever having
to step foot outside.
Another great thing about the skywalks is
that they connect to most of the parking garages,
which makes it really safe to get back to
So this building, Cavanaugh Hall, is home
to the School of Liberal Arts.
Liberal Arts prepares you for life no matter
what industry you’re going into.
Liberal arts students’ ability to think
critically, adapt quickly, and solve problems
is in demand from employers everywhere.
Something new that the School of Liberal arts
just started offering is the Dual Degree Advantage
The program allows any non-liberal arts major
to add a liberal arts degree and graduate
with two degrees in the same amount of time.
So, for example, you could add a language
degree to your engineering degree and be that
much more in demand once you graduate.
Cavanaugh Hall also houses various resources
including the Speakers Lab which offers free
assistance with any step of the speechmaking
process and access to practice studios so
you can run through your speech before giving
And there’s also one of the two Writing
Centers on campus which provides free assistance
for writing your papers.
They’ll help you edit, brainstorm, or anything
you need to make your paper the best it can
The second writing center on campus is in
the University Library, which we’ll see
And finally, did you know that IUPUI and Cavanaugh
Hall is one of the largest single-archives
in the US?
The Center for Ray Bradbury Studies is home
to more than 100,000 pages of published and
unpublished literary works stored in thirty-one
of the author’s filing cabinets.
The Center even includes a recreation of Bradbury’s
office and library as it evolved in Los Angeles,
California for more than half a century.
We’re now in one of Lecture Hall’s classrooms.
These are the largest classrooms on campus.
The largest lecture room can hold about 400
Most of the classes held here are intro level
or general education classes.
I’ve taken quite a few of my general education
classes here and even though there were a
lot of us in the class, I felt like the professors
made an effort to put names with faces.
I always had the opportunity to build relationships
with my classmates and professors through
team projects and the professors’ efforts
to build connections with us and get to know
Indianapolis is in our backyard. IUPUI students have access to a vibrant city that provides them with the opportunity to gain real-world experience in their field of choice.

Welcome to Taylor Courtyard, named after the
first Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and
one of the first African American administrators
Throughout the year, this space is used for
a variety of student events, including Weeks
Weeks of Welcome happens at the start of each
semester to welcome new students and returning
students to campus with events like an Ice
Cream Social, the involvement fair, internship
fair, and much more.
Students also play games between classes in
the courtyard: Frisbee is really popular,
soccer, or a few students will try a slackline
We’ll explore some of these spaces later,
but from Taylor Courtyard you can see Cavanaugh
Hall, Taylor Hall, The Business and SPEA building,
and across the street, the Tower Residence
Hall and Hine Hall.
Let’s head into Taylor Hall.
We’re now in Taylor Hall, home to University
University College is where most students
will begin their academic journey, before
transition into their degree-granting school.
University College offers a variety of resources
Most notably, Bridge Week, which is a program
designed for incoming freshmen to become familiar
with campus, receive academic support, and
meet their classmates before classes officially
start for the year.
After Bridge Week, all students continue into
a First-Year Seminar class.
The First-Year Seminar is a special course
that introduces students to key information
and skills needed to succeed at IUPUI.
Some First-Year Seminars are part of Learning
Communities, which connect two or more courses
by a common theme.
Students in Learning Communities get to take
multiple classes with the same group of students,
helping them make friends and build connections
while exploring real-world themes and taking
part in hands-on out of class activities.
University College also offers the Bepko Learning
Center and the Office for Academic and Career
Development, both resources designed to make
students successful in the classroom and once
The Multicultural Center is dedicated to engaging
everyone on campus to understand the values
of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
A quick crash course: Diversity illuminates
our differences and similarities, equity challenges
us to recognize the distribution of opportunities
and resources, and inclusion ensures that
every voice is represented and heard.
The MC can be seen around campus in Democracy
Plaza, discussion boards around campus are
used to discuss social justice and cultural
topics happening in the world, and Pass the
Mic events which offer an open forum for discussing
The LGBTQ+ Center is in the same part of Taylor
Hall, the center advocates for the LGBTQ+
community and provides resources, education,
and training on campus and throughout the
Now we’ll move on to the Four Corners of
Campus, where Taylor Hall connects with the
Business and SPEA building, University Library,
and the Education and Social Work building.
