Serving Those Who Have Served

Service doesn’t end when a uniform comes off. For many at IU Indianapolis, it simply takes a new shape.

Veteran students, military spouses, and dependents bring leadership, resilience, and perspective into our classrooms every day. Their experiences strengthen our campus and deepen our connection to the city we call home.

Indianapolis is a city shaped by service. From its role in the early drafting of the GI Bill® to its distinction as home to the nation’s second-highest number of military monuments, military history is part of the city’s everyday landscape. Places like Military Park remind us that service, sacrifice, and civic responsibility are deeply rooted here.

Located within this historic setting, IU Indianapolis carries that legacy forward. Through education, research, and community engagement, the campus doesn’t just honor service, it continues it.

Today, nearly 500 veteran students and more than 600 military spouses and dependents are part of the IU Indianapolis community. Each brings a unique story shaped by service adding depth, leadership, and lived experience to our learning environment. Their presence challenges and inspires us, reminding us that service takes many forms.

IU Indianapolis remains deeply committed to supporting the success and well-being of military-connected students, staff, and faculty. This commitment is reflected in our resources, our campus partnerships, and our ongoing efforts to create a welcoming, supportive environment where military-connected individuals can thrive.

As part of this commitment, IU Indianapolis is pursuing Tier 3 recognition through the Indiana Commission for Higher Education’s Collegiate Purple Star of Indiana. This designation reflects our intention to strengthen coordination, visibility, and support for military-connected students and their families across campus. It also signals our belief that supporting those who have served is not a one-time effort, but an ongoing responsibility that requires collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.

At IU Indianapolis, serving those who have served is part of who we are. As we move forward, we remain committed to ensuring that military-connected members of our community feel supported, valued, and empowered in their next chapter.
