Are you ready to register for classes?
Before you register
Talk with your academic advisor: Review your degree requirements and the classes you want to take, along with some alternative options (just in case). If you’re an undergraduate student, schedule an appointment with your advisor here. If you’re a graduate student, find your advisor by school.
Use Stellic to stay on target: Stellic is IU’s student success platform which will help guide you down the right path towards completing your degree.
- When registration opens: Your Stellic dashboard will show you the date and time that you can start registering for an upcoming semester.
- Track Progress shows you which degree requirements you’ve met and which ones still need to be completed.
- The Planner is where you’ll map out which courses you want to take and when.
- Schedule provides you with a weekly calendar view of the classes you’ve selected.
Other things to review: Resolving registration holds, obtaining class permissions, and knowing if you’ve met specific class prerequisites are important steps to being able to successfully register.
Permissions
Some courses require special permission from the school or department before you can enroll in that class. Here’s a few examples of class permissions:
- Department consent: You might see classes that say, ‘Department Consent Required’. This means you must get permission from that department before you’ll be able to successfully register in that class.
- Class standing: In some cases, departments require students to have a certain class standing (e.g., sophomore, junior) to enroll. Because class standing is determined by the number of credit hours you’ve passed at IU, visiting students and graduate nondegree students won’t automatically meet class-standing requirements. If you don’t meet this requirement, contact the department to find out if you’re eligible. Learn about class standing.
- Career-level restrictions: Undergraduate students won’t be able to register for graduate-level courses without first getting class permission from the department.
- Viewing permissions: You can see if you’ve been given a class permission via the Class Permissions task at One.IU.
Note: If you’ve been given a class permission, it does not guarantee you a seat in the class—it simply means you’ll be able to enroll if a seat is available.
Prerequisites
Some classes include prerequisite criteria you must meet before you can register in that class. Common examples include needing to complete a lower-level course first or requiring a particular score on a placement exam.
- If you don’t meet the prerequisite criteria, you’ll get an error message when you try to register. Contact your academic advisor to discuss alternative class options or to see if you might still be eligible with special permission.
- If you’re currently taking the class listed in the prerequisite, you’ll be able to enroll in the higher class with the expectation that you’ll successfully complete the class with a passing grade. The department offering the future class will verify all students meet the prerequisite criteria before each semester begins.
Prerequisites will be listed in the notes of the class. One example is CHEM-C 126 (Experimental Chemistry II) which states: Prerequisite: CHEM-C 105 and (CHEM-C 125 or CHEM-S 125) with a minimum of C- in each course.
Credit hour limits
Students can register for up to 18 credit hours total each semester.
Credit hour overload: To enroll in more than 18 credits, you need to first get permission from your advisor and the dean of your school. That permission must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar who can then help you enroll in those additional courses.
Summer limits: Most classes in the summer are offered during shorter summer sessions (Summer Session 1 and Summer Session 2). You can enroll in 9 credit hours in each summer session for a total of 18 credit hours for the entire semester.
Registration holds
Be sure there are no academic or financial holds that will prevent you from registering. Holds on your record will be viewable in red on the top of your Stellic dashboard.
Holds can also be viewed via the Record Holds task at One.IU.
