What is the cultural understanding requirement?

Courses that satisfy the cultural understanding gen ed requirement must include at least half of the following learning goals:

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast the range of diversity and universality in human history, societies, and ways of life
  • Analyze and understand the interconnectedness of global and local communities
  • Operate with civility in a complex world
  • Recognize the extent and impact of diversity among individuals, cultures, or societies in contemporary or historical contexts
  • Analyze and evaluate texts, objects, events, or ideas in their cultural context
  • Develop arguments about forms of human agency or expression grounded in rational analysis and in an understanding of and respect for cultural contexts
  • Analyze diverse narratives and evidence in order to explore the complexity of human experience across space and time
