Take classes at Ivy Tech as an IU Indianapolis student

If you are currently enrolled at IU Indianapolis and want to take a class at Ivy Tech, you must complete the guest student application.

IU Indianapolis students can register for and enroll in course(s) at Ivy Tech Community College in the Indianapolis Service Area while maintaining IU Indianapolis as their home institution via the Ivy Tech guest student application.

To qualify, an IU Indianapolis student must be in good standing and concurrently enrolled in at least one course at IU Indianapolis for the fall and spring semesters. There is no concurrent enrollment requirement for summer unless the student plans to use the Passport Financial Assistance Agreement.

Deadlines

Preferred deadline: Five weeks before the start of the course

Processing deadline: One week before the start of the course

Final deadline (not recommended): Monday before the start of the course

  • Ivy Tech begins registering for courses one month before IU Indianapolis, so submit your guest student application as early as possible. If a student submits their application later than the processing deadline, there is no guarantee that Ivy Tech will process it before the course begins.

Passport Financial Assistance Agreement (PFAA)

The Passport Financial Assistance Agreement is a coordinated effort between Ivy Tech Community College–Indianapolis Service Area and IU Indianapolis that allows enrollment at both institutions to be considered for financial aid purposes.

How to apply and enroll as an Ivy Tech student

  • To start the Ivy Tech guest student application, you'll need:
    • A current transcript
    • A verification of academic standing form (completed by an IU Indianapolis advisor)
    • A Passport Financial Assistance Agreement if you plan to use IU Indianapolis financial aid to pay for your Ivy Tech course (an IU Indianapolis academic advisor must sign for you)
  • To view Ivy Tech's course offerings, visit their course schedule search. You may select multiple Ivy Tech campuses, but if you plan to use the PFAA, be sure to select an Indianapolis Service Area location, as it can only be used in that region.
  • Submit the application online directly to Ivy Tech admissions electronically.
    • International students must also include a copy of their I-20.
  •  You will receive an email approximately 7–10 business days after submitting your application, prompting you to log in to My Ivy and enroll in your guest courses.
  • A new guest application must be completed every semester, and you may only register for the courses listed on the application.
You must receive a minimum grade of C or above for the Ivy Tech course to transfer and apply toward your IU Indianapolis major.

Obtaining your transcripts

When you've completed your Ivy Tech guest course(s), request an official transcript from Ivy Tech to ensure credit hours transfer. Request this through your My Ivy account and send it electronically to the IU Indianapolis Office of Undergraduate Admissions at mycredit@iu.edu. If you have trouble accessing your My Ivy account, contact Parchment Exchange via the Ivy Tech Registrar Office to order your credentials.

For more questions about transcript evaluation timelines, contact the IU Indianapolis Office of Financial Aid or call 317-274-4591, ext. 0.

Additional information for international students

If you're an international student, there are a few additional steps you'll need to complete in addition to the process above, including submitting an electronic copy of your full I-20 along with your guest student application. Without the entire I-20, the application will not be processed. Visas are not acceptable.

  • Before selecting your Ivy Tech courses, confirm the number of online credit hours your program allows with the IU Indianapolis Office of International Affairs.
  • SACM students have additional requirements.
  • Once enrolled in Ivy Tech course(s), complete the Concurrent Enrollment Verification eForm in your iStart account. This verifies full-time enrollment and must include a copy of your Ivy Tech schedule. More information is available on the IU Indianapolis Office of International Affairs website.

After submitting the guest student application, SACM students should prepare to submit two items to their SACM advisor:

  1. A letter of admission from Ivy Tech (satisfied by the confirmation email from Ivy Tech admissions).
  2. A letter from your IU Indianapolis academic advisor explaining why you're taking the course at Ivy Tech instead of IU Indianapolis.

From there, your SACM advisor prepares a letter of financial promise to Ivy Tech. Submit this letter to Ivy Tech's Financial Aid Office:
