Matching great jobs & great candidates
Easily search, filter & apply for jobs
It’s easy for students and alumni to get started with IU Indianapolis’ job board on Handshake!
- Students : All students enrolled in classes receive access automatically. Please wait at least 24 hours after enrolling before logging in.
- IU Alumni : Fill out a quick survey to request a Handshake login.
Handshake grants you access to see every job posted on their platform. You can use filters to narrow your search based on location, job type, specific employer, and more.
Once you narrow your search and find a job you want to apply for, you’ll find one of three application options:
- Apply: The application requires that you submit at least one document.
- Quick apply: Your profile will suffice for the application, and you do not need to submit additional documents.
- Apply externally: You must apply for the position outside of Handshake. When you click this option, a browser will automatically open to the employer’s application page.
No matter which way you end up submitting your application, make sure that your Handshake profile is complete and professional. Treat it the same way you would your LinkedIn profile to appeal to a wider range of employers.

Handshake FAQs for jobseekers
Handshake has three different privacy settings:
- Community: Your profile will be visible to all employers, students, and alumni who use the platform. You will need to use this setting to participate in job fairs and on-campus interviews as well as to message other students and alumni.
- Employers: Only employers will be able to view your profile. You may receive potential job opportunities with this privacy setting.
- Private: You may apply for jobs, but employers won’t be able to contact you unless you apply for one of their positions.
You can use the Q & A tab to ask career-related questions that other students, employers, or alumni from across Handshake's network can answer. Additionally, you can answer questions posted by other students if you have a helpful response.
This is an optional tab that you can use to find other students with community profiles across Handshake's network. This may be helpful if you would like to know more about a company and want to reach out to students who have previously worked there. You must use the community privacy settings to access this feature.
If you need to withdraw an application after submitting, follow these steps:
- Go to the Jobs tab from the top menu bar, and then select “Applications.” This will show you any jobs that you have previously applied for.
- Select the job that you would like to withdraw your application from. This will pull up the job details.
- Scroll down until you see a vertical red bar showing “Application Submitted.” Below that bar, you will see the option to withdraw your application.
- Select “Withdraw” to confirm.
The messaging tool can be used if you would like to send messages to other students, career services staff, or employers. If you are using the employers privacy setting, employers will be able to message you, but only if they have at least an 80% trust score, or if you have already applied to a job with their company.
If you are using the community privacy setting, you can send or receive messages from students and alumni across the platform in addition to employers. This may be useful if you would like to know more about a company and would like to message other students who have worked there. You can find more information about messaging here.
Employers have the option to notify students about their application within Handshake. There are seven statuses employers can use. However, not all employers will use this feature. See what different application statuses mean.
If you haven't received an update about the status of your application, follow up with the employer 7–14 days after the application deadline. If the start date is before the application deadline, then we recommend following up with the employer 7–14 days after you submit your application.
