Indiana University Convergent Bioscience and Technology Institute
Integrating bioscience, engineering, and data to accelerate research discovery
Scientists, engineers, and innovators unite at the Convergent Bioscience & Technology Institute (CBATI) to accelerate biomedical breakthroughs that directly improve health outcomes.
Designed to address today’s most pressing health challenges, our research spans smarter medical devices, personalized therapies, and advanced drug-delivery systems. CBATI serves as a hub for collaboration, combining expertise across disciplines to drive discoveries from concept to real-world impact.
Based out of IU Indianapolis, CBATI operates under the strategic leadership of Indiana University Research and is a partner of IU LAB. Both are part of a coordinated, university-wide effort to accelerate high-impact research across the state and the globe.
Conceptualized and launched by IU Research, the Institute is supported by a multi-year, multi-million-dollar investment. This funding supports faculty collaboration, shared infrastructure, and industry partnerships that drive high-impact discovery at the intersection of bioscience, engineering, and data science.
Aligning with Pillar Two: Transformative Research and Creativity of IU’s 2030 Strategic Plan, CBATI positions IU as a leader in convergent innovation—where biological insight meets technological acceleration.
We bring together diverse expertise and emerging technologies like AI to drive innovation, build partnerships, and expand our impact."
Chia-Ying (James) Lin, Ph.D Executive Director of CBATI

A new hub for innovation
Set to complete in Fall 2026, the STEM Lab Building exemplifies the IU 2030 Strategic Plan in action and builds on our strengths as Indianapolis' premier R1 institution. Part of IU Launch Accelerator for Biosciences (IU LAB), a first-of-its-kind initiative, the facility is positioned at the center of IU's goal to drive innovation in the state. The building will house the Convergent Bioscience and Technology Institute (CBATI), the Institute for Human Health and Wellbeing, three dozen research lab spaces, and serve as the home for interdisciplinary STEM research on the IU Indianapolis campus.
