Hiring international students

You may hire international students to fill your part-time job openings, but the hiring process will look a bit different depending on what type of visa status they have. Most international students will have an F-1 visa status, but some may have a J-1 visa status if they are exchange students who will be in the U.S. for less than a year.

No matter which status the student has, they may not have a Social Security number (SSN) until after you hire them. If you require a background check, the student must obtain a SSN beforehand. Background checks are not required by the federal government unless the student has been in the U.S. for at least a year. The SSN application process takes about two weeks, but students may begin working before they obtain their SSN.

Other considerations to note concerning hiring international students:

  • International students are not eligible for federal work study.
  • To fill out the I-9, you will need an I-20 from students with an F-1 visa status and a DS-2019 from students with a J-1 visa status.
