What is an internship?
An internship is a work experience that concentrates in a field of study or career interest. It gives you the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to a work position so that you can further develop your professional skills. Internships can be paid or unpaid. They allow:
- Students to gain valuable experience and demonstrate learning as they make professional connections and validate their choice of career field and work environment
- Employers to guide, assess, and develop workforce talent
- Educators to demonstrate the social relevance and practical applications of their disciplines and learning outcomes
- IU Indianapolis to forge sustainable, mutually beneficial relationships with the community
When can I do an internship?
You can do an internship any time during your undergraduate career. Internships can be an essential experience to discover what you like and dislike about your current career choice or field of study. It can give insight into what work culture you prefer, how you like to work (hands-on or indirectly), and whether to continue in that career or choose another. Taking on an internship early in your academic career gives you time to explore other career paths if you want.
Why should I do an internship?
Internships give you a better sense of what you want to pursue for your career by allowing you to apply your personal interests to a work environment. They also provide you with valuable skills that will translate well into your future career. If you want to be competitive for full-time employment after completing your IU Indianapolis degree, you should complete at least one internship during college. Data from our IU Indianapolis First Destination Survey show that graduates who completed an internship were significantly less likely to still be seeking employment after graduation and even reported significantly higher starting salaries.

How to find internships
One place you can find thousands of internships both on and off campus is on Handshake, the job posting platform. Currently enrolled students already have an account created for them on the platform. Posted internships may be local, somewhere else in the U.S., or fully remote. To filter out internships that would fit your goals and experience, complete your Handshake profile, use the keyword search, and take advantage of the search filters that the platform provides.
Work and Learn Indiana also gathers internship postings from across the state of Indiana into one platform. Some of these internships are eligible for the Employment Aid Readiness Network (EARN) Indiana program, which is a state work-study program. You can find links to Work and Learn Indiana postings on Handshake. You will need to create a separate account with Work and Learn Indiana to apply for any of their internships.

On-Campus Internship Program
The On-Campus Internship Program (OCIP) offers on-campus paid internships directly related to your academic program. Internships may be a semester long or a full academic year and are open to full-time students who do not plan on graduating within the same academic year. Students in the program are expected to work no more than 15 hours per week. You may participate in the program for more than one year, but you cannot stay in the same position for longer than a year.
Students interested in OCIP should apply using Handshake. You may send any questions you have about the program to the Office of Student Employment.
Life-Health Sciences Internship Program
The Life-Health Sciences Internship (LHSI) Program connects IU Indianapolis students with research and professional experience internships on and near campus. Interns explore and refine career and academic goals, gain valuable skills, and grow as professionals under the supervision of faculty and staff in IU Indianapolis graduate and professional programs. Internships are paid and last from the end of August until the beginning of May. You do not need to pursue a major in the life and health sciences to apply.
What to do after earning an internship
Once you've completed your internship experience, share it via Handshake to have it included on your Experiential and Applied Learning Record, the university's official record of vetted engaged learning experiences. You may also consider adding the experience to your ePortfolio to showcase the work you did and what you learned to future employers. Students are also encouraged to participate in some kind of showcase, such as the IU INSPIRE Showcase, to share about their experiences.
Guidance for international students
If you are an international student studying at IU Indianapolis, there are additional regulations you must adhere to when participating in an internship. For example, you will need to receive authorization before beginning an internship. Another important regulation to note is that you are limited to working 20 combined hours per week for all jobs you have on campus during the fall and spring semesters. You may work full-time on summer, winter, and spring breaks.
If you have not already obtained a Social Security number, you will need to apply for one once you receive an offer letter. The application process takes about two weeks. You may begin working before you receive a Social Security number as long as a criminal background check isn’t required for your position.
Additional regulations vary depending on whether you have an F-1 or J-1 visa. For example, F-1 students may work on- or off-campus while J-1 students must work on campus.
